Mick Virtue

Major Mick Virtue is a logistics manager with 13 years experience in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). He has specialised in road and air freight transportation, and currently manages the ADF’s air freight engineering certification and air logistics training organisation. In this role he is responsible for providing agile, and responsive, air freight approval teams to enable ADF support to disaster relief operations across the globe, as well as providing a training centre for the ADF’s air logistics staff.

Mick, and his team of 70, provided direct support to the natural disasters which struck the Asia-Pacific Region at the beginning of 2011; supporting the deployment of urban search and rescue teams to Christchurch, water purification units to Queensland and specialist mobile water cannons to Japan to assist in limiting damage to the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. In addition to this Australian based support, Mick sent a freight clearance team into Japan to provide inter-country air movement support for humanitarian assistance supplies.

In his current role Mick has been required to step way from purely logistics management, and move into General Management. This has provided Mick the opportunity to grow his leadership and management skills as he coordinates an operations manager, logistics manager, human resources manager, engineering manager and two training supervisors to achieve strategic business unit outcomes. This responsibility, coupled with full financial accountability of the business unit, has provided Mick the chance to steer the organisation towards implementation of improved systems utilising Lean principles and enhanced customer relationship management. His MBA qualification has provided a strong background to support this management drive to implement best business practices across the organisation.

Mick currently lives in the North-West of Sydney with his wife, Rachel, and two children, Ella and Jackson. He enjoys the occasional game of golf, a quiet beer and spending precious time with his young family.
