Jessica Paton CMILT

Jessica is a Chartered Member of CILT Australia, and is the Manager of Training for Queensland Rails’ Train Service Delivery unit. Jessica also holds an Honours degree in Psychology, and is a registered practicing psychologist.

Working in the transport industry has given Jessica the opportunity to apply her skills and expertise in a non-conventional role, utilizing her knowledge of human cognition, capability and behaviour to effect positive change within a robust operational setting.

Notably, Jessica developed and implemented a non-technical skills based performance improvement framework, targeting the ‘human’ contributing factors to safety incidents and breaches. This intervention strategy involves individualised cognitive coaching focusing on specific contributing factors associated with the event, and is conducted within a dynamic working environment, including on-track, in-cab development, and in simulators to practice and develop skills. This intervention program has resulted in significant improvements in the management of post-incident processes and safety outcomes.

Jessica’s involvement with CILT Australia began in 2013 when she was nominated for, and awarded, the National Young Professional of the Year Award. Subsequently, Jessica was awarded the prestigious CILT International Young Achiever of the Year in 2014, which she refers to as an enduring career highlight. In addition to these accolades, Jessica has noted that the extensive professional networking opportunities offered by CILT Australia have been of greatest benefit.

Recognizing the unlimited potential for young professionals within the industry, Jessica has actively engaged in attracting others in her profession into the transport industry. She is an approved Supervisor with the Psychology Board of Australia, and has used this as an opportunity to offer on-site placements for students undertaking their Masters in Organisational Psychology.

Jessica’s contributions to the broader field of transport and logistics includes playing host to local networking events for T&L professionals, managing rail related benchmarking activities involving international rail operators, and acting as a peer-reviewer for international research bodies including InterFleet NZ.
