Literally, courier industry has a long history about deliver parcels and messages over long distance all over the world. Historical documents show that in early civilization, those who needed messages delivered over a long distance used "runners." These people would literally run miles, transporting messages or packages from one village to another; these runners were presented in ancient civilization such as China, Greece, and some Native American communities. As per historical records, in due time, people began to utilise horses as a major form of transportation, and improve the efficiency of messengers by developing intricate networks of messenger routes. Back to 500 years ago, people already built official horse way for these runners in ancient China. The earliest record of courier parcel service in Australia can be traced back to 1809. The Australian courier parcel service’s origin is Australia Post.
A courier company is a less than truckload (LTL) third party logistics (3PL) carrier. 3PLs are sorted into different types including freight forwarders, courier companies and other companies that integrate & offer subcontracted logistics and transportation services. Courier company is one of the most significant 3PLs modules for all types of 3PLs. And the operational costs for a carrier comprise three major components: costs for drivers and vehicles making local pickups and deliveries, line haul costs for transporting freight between terminals, and handling costs for sorting and consolidating freight. Handling freight in an LTL terminal is labour-intensive, and therefore expensive.
Courier is a booming industry in today’s world, with the rapid development of e-business, shorter product and technology life cycles and higher customer expectations, courier service has become more and more popular. Obviously, online sales increased sharply worldwide including Australia over the past decade. A large growth number of online shopping transactions imply huge demand of delivery services. Traditionally, a courier company delivers messages, packages and mail. A courier service is distinguished from an ordinary mail service by features such as speed, security, tracking, signature, specialisation and individualisation of services, and committed delivery time which is optional for most everyday mail services.
