Industry driving safety improvements in heavy vehicle driver skills

Work is currently underway to develop improved training standards surrounding safety in heavy vehicle driver skills.

This work is of high priority to the Northern Territory.

If you are reading this, chances are, you are probably a heavy vehicle driver and therefore could also be a driver for improvements in skills for your industry.

The trucks of today have many additional safety features, but it still comes down to the driver, and their level of skill, to react appropriately to prevent incidents and accidents.

A Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) has been formed consisting of heavy vehicle driver subject matter experts and regulators from across Australia to assist the Transport and Logistics Industry Reference Committee (IRC) to review and improve training standards in heavy vehicle driver safety.

The revised training standards will provide heavy vehicle drivers with base-level skills on which they can build as they progress through various licence categories.

Consultations will take place around Australia and dates for the NT workshop will be announced once draft standards have been developed and released for comment.

NT industry experts are encouraged to attend the NT consultation and will be provided the opportunity to supply feedback on the revised standards during the workshop.

Territory business and the way we operate are unique and it is paramount that we ensure the NT are considered during this national work. The workshop will aim to capture comments and suggestions to ensure changes to units of competency used to train our heavy vehicle drivers to increase the level of safety here in the NT and the broader Australia.
