Introducing the Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) PDF Print E-mail
There are thousands of practicing and experienced logistics professionals in Australia. They range from managers of supply chain operations to specialised IT experts to clerical and warehouse based support staff.
Since the rise of the logistics industry in the last few decades, these dedicated and skilled people have not been recognised as have their counterparts in other professions. For example, accountants have the CPA accreditation. Marketing has the CPM and real estate has the CPV. Accreditation means something in a professional setting - it implies a focus on excellence and a commitment to personal development within the profession.

The Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) programme is now available to all employees in the industry who value excellence in logistics and supply chain management.

With the assistance of the Transport and Logistics Centre (TALC), Australia's major T&L industry associations banded together to introduce a nationally consistent CPL programme. For over twelve months TALC and industry representatives worked together to develop a relevant and valuable professional development programme for the industry.

The CPL programme will be offered in Australia by;
  • The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport
  • The Logistics Association of Australia Ltd
  • The Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia
  • Australasian Production and Inventory Control Society
  • Australian Institute of Traffic Planning and Management
The CPL will become the benchmark of excellence for measuring capability and proficiency within the profession of logistics and supply-chain management.

The Logistics Professional

Logistics, as a term now embraces warehousing, freight, transportation and distribution, through to supply chain management.  The days when transportation, warehousing, distribution and materials management were seen as separate functions are gone.  Today, professionalism of a high standard is required to manage these complex, disparate functions in a seamless and integrated supply chain mode with a clear understanding of the need to track the physical goods/services flow, financial flow, and information flow.

Logistics is a profession that is dealing with a freight task that is expected to double over the next decade.  The demand for professionals, technical experts and executives will as a consequence continue to rise.

As a new professional certification, the CPL will enable employees in the logistics industry to develop their capability more effectively, and in doing so assist in defining the logistics profession. The emphasis on continual improvement of knowledge and skills is timely for an industry that requires skilled personnel to reflect and underpin its importance to our global economy.

Certification Fee

A 'once only' application fee of $500 for certification is required by your nominated industry association.  Thereafter a yearly administration fee of $75 is payable to maintain your certified status and allow continued use of the 'CPL' post nominal.

The CPL Certification Council has been set up by the participating associations and consists of representatives from each organisation. The CPL Certification Council issues Certificates to all successful CPL applicants.

The CPL Certification Council is also responsible for maintaining professional and ethical standards.

The CPL programme is intended to become the life partner for many in the industry as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is crucial to maintaining CPL status. By attending activities such as seminars, site visits, conferences, training courses and executive programmes you will assist the advancement of your proficiency across the breadth and depth of logistics disciplines. The industry associations will publicise relevant events and activities on their respective web sites.

For the first time, persons working in logistics will be recognised for their professional standing in a similar way to their counterparts, in the accounting, finance, and engineering professions.
