Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

CPD Requirements for the Certified Professional Logistician (CPL)

Activities that accrue points under the CPD scheme are divided into the following categories listed below.

Minimum requirements:
In order to maintain certification, a minimum of 120 points over a three year period are required. Please note that the weighted hours are calculated by multiplying the actual hours by the relevant time weighting factors. All weightings are per hour of activity time. For example, John Smith attends a program on City Logistics at the University of Melbourne for 5 weeks involving 2 hours per week attendance at lectures. The total 10 hours of attendance are then multiplied by the weighting 2.0 in category A for a total of 20 hours CPD.

Participation in each CPD activity must specify a direct relationship to the specific professional capability to which the CPD relates. This requirement ensures CPD activities are closely linked to the profession.

Category Criteria

  • A:  Face to Face hours or equivalent courses that include some form of assessment.
  • B1: Related to professional development.
  • B2: Private study is self-paced and involves the reading of books, journals and manuals to familiarise yourself with the latest techniques, legal requirements, etc. Participants must    list details of the book, journal, manual etc as well as the article/chapter headings to give an indication of new knowledge gained.
  • C:  Conferences, seminars, workshops, exhibitions, inspections and meetings run by acknowledged experts can be claimed as CPD provided that the content relates to the development of your professional career. Social functions are not to be included.
  • D:  Preparation and presentation of material for Conferences, seminars, meetings and workshops can be claimed if these activities are related to your professional development. Participants are not able to claim for the preparation of materials for courses that are part of their normal    employment.
  • E:  This includes participation on committees and/or panels involved with the furthering of the profession, as well as the holding of a position on a Board of Directors of a recognised    association.
  • F:  Special activities or events that will have a weighting factor as detailed by CILTA.

CPD Requirements for a Certified Transport Planner (CTP)

Becoming a CTP is the start of an ongoing process of learning and development. Retention of CTP status requires completion of 120 CPD Points over a three year period of recognised CPD activity in each year after the initial granting of CTP status. This is to maintain the currency of your accreditation as a CTP, through taking up learning and development opportunities and maintaining an active involvement in your profession and its networks.

It is best that you plan for your CPD activities over the course of the three year period, and do not leave it too late to meet the requirements. Otherwise you may forego particular CPD opportunities that would be of most benefit to your job, and career in general.

CILTA will also undertake the review of your CPD activity and will provide you with specific guidance on our requirements for CPD. We will be in contact with you during the three year period to remind you of the need to submit evidence of your CPD activity. The cost of the three year review of CPD is $AU110 (including GST), payable to your nominated assessing organisation. If evidence of CPD activity is not submitted, and the fee not paid, the accreditation as CTP will lapse and the post nominals CTP can no longer be used.

What are Recognised CPD Activities?

In setting our CPD requirements we must operate within a broad framework set down by the Transport and Logistics Certification Council as to what constitutes a CPD activity, and the weighting of that activity.

The following activities are covered within the Council's CPD framework:

  1. Formal study, including short courses

  2. Informal learning, eg 'on the job' opportunities

  3. Informal private study, tours or site visits, professional exchanges

  4. Attendance at association or industry events, such as Conferences, briefings, dinner meetings with guest speaker, seminars and workshops

  5. Presentations at Conferences, seminars or workshops, and/or publication of papers and reports

  6. Participation in association committee work related to professional development and standards

  7. Other special events or activities e.g. receipt of industry or association awards

Weightings will vary across specific activities, eg participation in a Conference or seminar as a guest speaker or presenter will rate more highly than attendance alone. More detail on the framework can be found under the above CPD Requirements.
